In a free adaptation of Shakespeare’s
A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Newton Moreno enacts the story of Vine – a Chilean theater director living in exile, who spent the last 20 years dreaming of his own play interrupted by the military coup in 1973 – that same Shakespeare play – and sadly recalling his political missing partner, Laura.
One play mirrors the other and both jointly tell the story: by association of Shakespeare’s character King Oberon with a Chilean military, for instance, or of Queen Titania with the owner of a copper mine, the matriarch of a traditional Chilean family. The fight for the love of a young girl is central to both plots. The Elizabethan comedy on love inspires the Brazilian play, that adds political contours to the story.
The theatrical game, also a theme of this play, is disclosed to the audience by means of a rehearsal atmosphere, as when director Vine is setting up the scenes for
Dream. Shakespeare’s particular humor and musicality are present in the characters’ blunt declarations about torture and murder during the Chilean dictatorship - which remind the spectator of the oscillations between delirium and reality.
