MIRADA OCCUPATION

Envisioning Scenarios

When facing certain gaps in its dynamics, our society, capable of repeatedly reformulating itself, develops perspectives that reveal new projects for maintaining the world. A decisive episode of the present, the pandemic that has affected us since 2020 has imposed distancing in the different instances of life, transforming sociocultural practices and, consequently, sparking perspectives on - and from - such circumstances.

Faced with this inevitable and unpredictable scenario, those who make art a powerful means of (re)creating ties with the world have demonstrated an ability to articulate formats and themes that are imperative for us to establish relationships with what happened to us, its consequences, and, above all, with the conditions that led us here and the paths that glimpse new horizons.

After five editions and ten years of existence, Mirada – Ibero-American Performing Arts Festival did not take place in 2020 due to the health crisis. Observing that production has never ceased and has made new aesthetic and conceptual resources possible, Ocupação Mirada 2021 takes place this year – before the sixth edition of the festival in 2022 – and seeks to foster grounds for sharing that announce updated characteristics of aspects such as conception, creation, and enjoyment.

Dedicated to artistic productions and reflections from the different territories and plurality of cultures of Ibero-America, Ocupação Mirada 2021 uses a hybrid format between in-person and online, which includes shows, process openings, audiovisual collections and formative actions. These are actions that continue the trajectory of the festival, as part of its memory and its new rewards, which bring together experiences acquired by both creators and spectators throughout this period and address fundamental themes in our sensitive and critical approaches to geopolitical contexts, which may be familiar to us and also strange at first contact.

By recognizing in this course particular ways of observing, relating to, and expressing ourselves about what passes right through us and makes us societies and individuals, and which are tenaciously and incessantly investigated by contemporary theater, Ocupação Mirada 2021 makes a way traced by bridges between artists and audiences, in which poetics and discourses transit, inspiring the apprehension, interpretation, and reformulation of the human trajectory.
